The concept of macro is familiar to anyone who has ever held a camera and tried to take close-up pictures of flowers or bugs, etc. However, this term is misused in most cases. This is because it is only a macro when the subject is transferred to the camera chip at a real scale of 1:1 to 30:1 (i.e. a 1 cm subject will be 1 cm or larger on the camera sensor). In most cases, such magnification can only be achieved by using special (more expensive) lenses or by using macro intermediate rings. So for most conventional photography, this is close-up photography. Scales of 1:2 and smaller are used.
